Warm Up - Apple Fractions
I used apples and an apple slicer from Dollar General to support this warm up.
Warm Up - Practical Fractions
This one just has a few different ways to look at fractions in real life.
Warm Up - Counting By Fives
This warm up was in response to a classwide need for understanding the values of coins.
We started on Monday with pennies. We used plastic coins as a manipulative.
Warm Up - Calendar Math
With this one, I used a calendar as a visual aid because my students had difficulty with
understanding days, weeks and months. The second question deals with Least to Greatest
and scaffolded toward the Least to Greatest lesson planned for the day.
Warm Up - Fractions and Grocery Math
I used the names of my students and their favorites to personalize this one.
Warm Up - Cat Math
My students were interested in my cats, particularly since Porter came from and was
named for our school. This one talks about customary weight and begins discussion for
writing and comparing proportions.
Warm Up - Averages
This one was a bit daunting and probably not well suited for lower levels.
Before class, I entered in my student's grades and printed an individual grade sheet for
each of them. (I made sure that all of my students were passing, so that none of them
would feel alienated in our discussion).
Using calculators, we added up all of our grades and talked about the process of how
teachers find grades. We then springboarded into discussion about median, mode and
range.
These are just a few of the Warm Ups I used in my class room. Sometimes I used
these as introductory pieces for the lesson I had planned for the day. Most times,
though, I used the warm ups as a kind of skill refresher from the day before.
I've included a place for the date in these, but they're Microsoft Word 2003 files
that can be adapted for your needs. Just right click on the document link to
