New York City

Pre-ramble
June 17 - We’re home now and exhausted, sitting amidst half-unpacked bags and packages, with around ten
different attachments sprouting from the Lappy’s USB hub while we download images and recharge devices from
our trip to New York City. Katya is in her room, writing her own fictionalized version of our travels (starring
Cinderkelly and Fairy Mom, set against the backdrop of the magical kingdom of Manhattan Island). I’m downloading
the Spamalot CD into my iTunes, so that I can mix that fun into the random setting on my iPod.
It’s quiet. Compared to our last week’s adventures, it’s exceedingly quiet. New York is a city with volume, and
even we country folk acclimatize to that pulse quickly. That’s not to say that I miss it, just that I notice its
absence.
Most of this travelogue was recorded whilst riding on the subway, so it’s weighted with subway stories. We did
spend a substantial amount of time riding the trains – some of it due to navigational mishaps on my part – but not so
much as this log suggests. I hope to provide some tips for avoiding said mishaps, not that they weren’t without
some merit as part of our grand New York adventure.
I guess that the catch-phrase for this trip, as summarized succinctly by Katya, is this: overwhelming, but in a good
way. In our travels we had not encountered a city so full of… fullness? Anyway, I hope to purvey that sense,
because although we were in New York City for a handful of days, plus two, we felt that we did a whole lot more.
